Newport, County Mayo,

A beautiful heritage town at the heart of the Great Western Greenway, stunningly located on the shores of Clew Bay along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Walking & Cycling

The Great Western Greenway runs through the town of Newport and right by Hotel Newport's front doorstep. It is a wonderful facility for walkers and cyclists alike and Hotel Newport is ideally located as both a starting or end point to those taking to the Greenway by either foot or bike. The trail mainly follows the track of the famous Newport / Mulranny railway which closed in 1937. The Greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland passing through some of the most stunning scenery in the West of Ireland.

We get regular request, from visitors to Newport who are staying with us, if there is a company who organise walks and tours within the local vicinity, We are pleased to recommend our friends at Terra Firma, who are Newport based. Daytime and nighttime walks & hikes can be organised along with heritage tours, dark sky stargazing and local folklore walks. Visit Terra Firma’s website or call Georgia and Ged on 089 240 9015.

Renowned for its excellent fishing, Newport offers something for everyone - whatever your level of expertise. We have sea angling in the bountiful waters of Clew Bay, while Newport River and Beltra Lake are regarded as some of the best fresh water fishing grounds in Europe.

Newport is becoming an increasingly popular village for golfers and groups looking to enjoy excellent golf while taking in some of the most stunning scenery along the Wild Atlantic Way. Its growing popularity is due to its central located between the two nearby golf courses, the Mulranny Golf Links and Westport Golf Club and not to forget the challenging Links on Achill Island.
