Most Scenic Section of the Great Western Greenway - 31km
The trail between Newport to Achill, passing through Mulranny, is regarded as the best section in terms of scenery, distance from the main road and overall experience. Discover the route information, distance and what to see and do along the way.
This route has two sections - 31 km in total (Appox. 3.5 - 4 hours cycle)
Section 1
Newport to Mulranny - First section of the Newport to Achill Route
This section is perfect for families and those of moderate fitness, as it provides excellent scenery, peace and quiet and is a nice distance to do if you don’t do a lot of cycling. This section is the only section with on track.The greenway is predominantly flat as for the most part was developed on the railway line, and any gradients you will encounter are fairly gradual. Trail section information as follows:
Start/Trailhead: In Newport an official access point is located to the left just off the N59 travelling to Mallaranny. In Mallaranny an official access point is located to the right just off the N59 travelling to Bangor.
Distance: 18 km
Terrain: Greenway off road cycle and walking trail
Estimated Time Cycling: 2 to 2.5 Hours
Estimated Time Walking: 5 to 5.5 Hours

Highlights:
- Before you leave Newport, be sure to take a walk over the Seven-arch railway viaduct built in 1894.
- We also recommend that you visit St Patricks Church, built on the hilltop in 1918 over looking the town, where you can discover one of Ireland’s greatest stain glass treasures, “The Last Judgment” by Harry Clarke.
- The first stop out of Newport is Burrishoole Abbey, a stunning Friary built in the 15th century
- Along route enjoy views of the spectacular Nephin Beg mountain range, Clew Bay, Clare Island & Croagh Patrick.
- You can also stop along route at Rockfleet Castle (Carrickahowley) the 16th-century tower house of Grainne O'Malley, the infamous pirate queen.
Section 2
Mulranny to Achill - Second section of the Newport to Achill Route
Start/Trailhead: In Mullranny an official access point is located to the right just off the N59 travelling to Bangor. An access point is also located to the rear of the Mulranny Park Hotel. On Achill Sound an official access point is located at Óstán Oileán Acla / Achill Island Hotel at the gateway to Achill Island, Follow finger post signage onto Greenway

Estimated Time Walking: 2 to 2.5 Hours

- Cross Mulranny’s Causeway, built across TrawoughterBay in 1889
- Explore the island of Achill when you get there. So much to see and do if you aren’t too tired from the cycling – including Keel and Keem Beach. The Deserted Village and the 15th century Kildavnet Tower
