Achill Island

Achill Island in County Mayo is the largest island off the coast of Ireland.

Connected to the mainland by a bridge, the island is just a 30 min drive from Hotel Newport (31.0 km) via N59 and R319.
Visiting the island is one of the most popular things to do for guest staying at our hotel.

Achill is a place of sheer beauty, with mountains, lakes, valleys, wild moors and some of the most magnificent cliff scenery in Europe. With long sandy beaches and little villages, it is a must for the traveller who appreciates beauty and culture. The island is home to 5 discovery points along the Wild Atlantic Way, one of which is Keem Bay a selected must see Signature Point. It is also the final destination along the Great Western Greenway from our hotel Newport.

15 miles long and 11 miles wide, the island is 87% peat bog and has a population of approx. 3,000 people. There are between 500-600 native Irish speakers in Achill parish. Early human settlements are believed to have been established on Achill around 3000 BC.  A paddle dating from this period was found at the crannóg near Dookinella.
