The small and picturesque town of Newport has as its most distinctive feature, an elegant seven arch viaduct dominating the townscape. It was built in 1892 to carry the Westport-Achill railway line. The railway no longer exists but the viaduct has been beautifully restored and is a wonderful walkway for locals and visitors alike.
St Patrick’s Catholic Church towers high above the town, a good example of the Irish Romanesque style. It is particularly notable for the stained glass window by renowned artist Harry Clarke. The stained glass window over the High Altar, in the east wall of Saint Patrick’s Church, is one of the outstanding features of this building. It was the last work executed by the late Harry Clarke of Clarke Studios and was commissioned by the late Canon McDonald P.P. and purchased with his life insurance gratuity.

The stately edifice of Newport House is visible across the estuary when approaching Newport from the south. The immediate area is rich in history and archaeology.

Some highlights for visitors are the 15th century Burrishoole Abbey and Carrigahowley Castle once a stronghold of Granuaile, the world famous pirate queen. The ancestral home of Princess Grace of Monaco is a short drive away and she and Prince Rainier were frequent visitors to the area.
